Finding inspiration out of season
It’s no secret that the Hemingway jacket is inspired by the great American writer Ernest Hemingway. But his influence on Hemingsworth goes far beyond outward aesthetics of the garment. Hemingway developed a style of writing that was elegant and beautifully crafted. He called it the ‘iceberg’ theory of writing; by revealing pared-down, carefully-chosen surface details, Hemingway allows the reader to uncover the hidden complexity underneath.
Hemingway, a war journalist with a reputation as an uncompromising man of action, would surely have appreciated the functional design of the jacket that bears his name. Durability, adjustable fit and spacious pockets for stowing a notebook or camera make it an ideal travel companion.
The writer first exhibited his ‘iceberg’ style of writing in the story Out of Season, in which a young American couple head out for a day’s fishing in wintery northern Italy. This archetype of the adventurous, independent international traveller occurs throughout Hemingway’s writing. Out of Season is set in Cortina d’Ampezzo, not far from the dramatic Tre Cime di Lavaredo. The characters are wrapped up in multiple layers against the bitter mountain climate for the walk down to the riverbank, led by a local guide.
Hemingsworth’s AW21 collection is designed to be layered in different combinations, perfect for modern travellers and outdoor pursuits. The Hemingway jacket itself is a versatile outer-layer, a lightweight jacket that can be worn on warmer evenings, with tumbled dry wax finish to protect against the elements when the weather is more challenging.
